Guerdat may have pointed his son toward a riding career back in 1984, when he returned home from the Los Angeles Olympics with a tiny pair of riding boots for him. Steve, then aged two, was so thrilled with the boots that he insisted on wearing them to bed.
At 21, Steve was one of the youngest riders at last year's European Championships. He made a spectacular debut, jumping a double clear round on Tepic la Silla for the Swiss team that took the bronze medals and finishing sixth individually. After such a stunning performance, he was naturally being tipped as a bright star of the future.
.
Philippe now trains the Spanish team and Steve has settled into his base in the Netherlands, training with the Dutch rider Jan Tops. "He has so much experience after 20 years in the sport," Steve says of Tops. "And he has the nicest stables you can have. It's a dream to be there." G.M.
