Riding Dynamix de Bélhème, Steve produced a beautifully accurate round in the opening speed competition of the World Equestrian Games. He sits fifth in the provisional individual standings, less than two seconds behind winner Julien Epaillard.
The speed leg opening the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, counting towards both the individual and the team competitions, had the feel of a major Grand Prix. With 145 starters and a schedule stretching over more than seven hours, it brought together most of the world's leading combinations.
Steve and Dynamix de Bélhème delivered a round of real harmony, the Jura-born rider only taking genuine risks in the closing stages, notably at the double of oxers set along the grandstand after a tight turn. He posted the fifth fastest time of the day, 1.72 seconds behind Julien Epaillard, who won with Fringant de Vesquerie, and only hundredths off Harrie Smolders, Sophie Hinners and Scott Brash.
Dynamix jumped magnificently, I really had her with me
said Steve, describing a long and nervously demanding day full of waiting and uncertainty, but one he ended thoroughly satisfied with.
For the Swiss team, the first double on course proved costly. Martin Fuchs (Conner Jei) and Jason Smith (Picobello van't Roosakker) both had a rail there, finishing 69th and 90th respectively. On his debut at this level, Gaëtan Joliat carried out his anchor role with determination aboard Chelsea Z and looked set for a clear round until the very last fence fell, leaving him 60th. Switzerland lies 13th at this stage.
The team competition continues on Thursday from 9am, with the aim of closing in on the ten nations that will qualify for Friday evening's final.
