World Cup Final in Show Jumping in Gothenburg: Steve Guerdat defending his title with Corbinian
With his from the start to the end perfectly prepared Corbinian, Steve Guerdat is the first rider in history who could defend his title with two different horses. A year ago at his triumph in Las Vegas he set on the mare Albführen's Paille. Second was the Dutchman Harrie Smolders, third the German Daniel Deusser, fourth Marcus Ehning missing narrowly the podium.
What an extraordinary series of titles! After he triumphed in 2012 at the Olympic Games in London with Nino des Buissonnets, and 2015 already won the final of the FEI World Cup with Paille - after he was already twice second in previous years with Nino -, Steve Guerdat defended on Easter Monday in Gothenburg successfully his title before 12,000 enthusiastic spectators who celebrated him and his excellent Corbinian with a standing ovation.
"It is for me an extraordinary victory. I felt that Corbinian had the potential to do it, and we had already mastered three good courses in 's-Hertogenbosch in the preparation, which has built up confidence. But to imagine here now a victory, with five competitions and such courses, that could not be foreseen. And it was important for me to ride here better than in my last course last year in the Final in Las Vegas. To win now here this historic championship and in front of this exceptional audience fills me with immense joy, "Steve Guerdat said, and underlined the importance of his whole team, the owners, grooms, trainers, veterinarian, equerry, and announced an interview for the next edition of Le Cavalier Romand on that.
At the press conference as in numerous television interviews Steve always emphasized his love to the sport and to his priviledged live with his horses, and therefore also responded to a question from a journalist who asked him if he had realized that he had gained 232,000 euros this weekend: "This is not what motivates me - it is the sport!".
